Can New Lawsuits for the Juul Help with Teen Nicotine Addiction?

Vaping has exponentially increased in popularity and in sales over the last five years especially in high school students. Many parents have become leery about their teenagers who have started to vape although evidence that vaping affects someone physically and mentally in the long run has yet to be produced. The fact that the Juul is like smoking 200 cigarettes with each cartridge is enough to cause concern for a teen's health. There has not been too much of an uproar about vaping due to of the lack of research - until now. Several consumers in the last six months have come forward to file complaints against Juul. One case with two people states that the nicotine salts caused them to become addicted rather than help them to quit smoking cigarettes like they had anticipated. The plaintiffs were under the impression that vaping could help them to taper off cigarettes by use vaping as the lesser of two evils. What happened next is that neither person could stop Juuling because they became even more addicted to the nicotine salts than what they claimed to be with traditional cigarettes. Another recent case that was filed against Juul came from the mother of a 15-year-old boy who became highly addicted to Juuling that affected both his behavior and academic performance. The suit confronts the fact that a Juul pod contains strong amounts of nicotine that are even too strong for adult consumption let alone for a teen. Although Juul states that their marketing campaigns are directed to ages 21 and over, their website does little to verify the age of the person purchasing the Juul pod. Part of the claim is that Juul is not doing their part to keep their product out of the hands to those unsuspecting victims who are underage. In March, several health groups and organizations collaborated to file a suit against the Food and Drug Administration stating that e-cigarettes were not required to be reviewed prior to marketing the product. The complaint continues on to say that e-cigarette companies, such as Juul, are marketing to adolescents with their novelty packaging and flavors that appeal to adolescents. San Francisco recently banned flavored e-cigarettes based on the premise that the flavors were deliberately targeted to minors. The city's purpose is to protect the youth as with others who have filed their own claims while Juul continues to defend their product without any regard.
